Pet Names

Nearly every couple I know uses “pet names” of some sort for each other.  I think, in general, it’s cute.  But as with all things cute, too much will kill you.  The following are too cute to use when company is over.

1.  Daddy/Mommy -  If your spouse is not your biological parent, please don’t act as such.  If your spouse is your parent, start your own blog.  Immediately.

2. Pumpkin/Squash/Carrott – Really?  No, don’t tell us.  We do NOT want to know.

3.  Big Man/ Little Mama – Unless this is your CB handle, um..no.  Breaker. Breaker.

4.  Toot/Poot -  We can figure it out on our own. Thanks.

5.  Lover- Eww.  We get it. You have “relations”.  Congratulations.

6.  Jelly Belly/Big Bertha-  Okay, these just sound insulting.  Get therapy.

7.  Pookie/ Snookums/ Fuzzy Kitten- PUH LEEZ!  Somebody grab me an epi pen! STAT!

8.  Tater Tot/ Oyster/ Ham Bone/ Pork Chop/ Cornbread-   Just… No.

9.  Little Girl/ Baby Girl-  These are the catch phrases of the creepy people who end up on that Dateline show “To Catch a Predator”.

10.  Hot Stuff/ Hot Thing-  If your spouse is currently on fire, go ahead.  Otherwise? Cool it! (Pun intended)

So I guess my wife calling me “studmuffin” and me calling her “she who must be obeyed” is all right?

My nickname for Maggy is “Rita” … acquired on our honeymoon as we ate someplace that had Margaritas (Her name is Margaret). She calls me “Buff” … as my brother did when we were kids. He called me that, I think, as short for buffalo. Nice. But I don’t think we use those names much.

That’s a funny post. My wife and I use our names backwards as pet names for each other.

    Patrick is TOO funny. :)

I call my wife by her first name, Laura, just because everyone else calls her by Lea. I think I want to feel special and have a name for her that no one else calls her.

OK… So I learned early in marriage that I can’t use rhyming slang for ‘wife’ like ‘bread knife’ or ‘trouble and strife’, I’m not allowed to call her ” ‘er indoors” which is a well known name in England. I’m also not allowed to call her things like ’she who must be obeyed’ or ‘mein fuhrer’ or ‘the little woman’ and I’m scared to try to use her name in case I slip and get it wrong (that would be disasterous!). “Oi, you” never goes down too well and now you’ve come up with this long list of other names I can’t use in public so I’ve decided that I’ll employ the following strategy:

    1) If I need to speak to my wife, I’ll pretend she’s deaf and get her attention by touching her shoulder or something then I’ll just talk to her without using any name.

    2) I won’t say anything to anyone else about my wife or about anything that we might have done together, ever.

    3) If someone else is talking about my wife, I’ll either not get involved or I’ll skillfully redirect the conversation with something like “so… are you a Wesleyan or a Calvinist?”

Patrick- any who is called She Who Must Be Obeyed should never be crossed. Ever. You two pass.

John- Maggy/Margarita! So funny. I would never have guessed. Oh, well, it is always the quiet ones you have to watch out for…:)

    Brad- Very clever!

Trey- That is sweet. A special name just for her.

Peter P- AS USUAl, you had me rollin in the floor!

Allison- Hunny Bunny is borderline- but passable. Just don’t sit in his lap while you say it and you should be just fine :)

And I have friends who are “Daddy” and “Baby” to each other. Why does that sound so WRONG?
